BBC 3D programming is ‘on hold’ indefinitely

The BBC is to suspend 3D programming for an indefinite period due to a “lack of public appetite” for the technology. Kim Shillinglaw, the BBC’s head of 3D, said it had “not been taken off” with audiences who found it “quite slow”. The BBC began a two-year 3D trial in 2011, broadcasting several shows and events in 3D, including the Olympic Games and Strictly Come Dancing. A Doctor Who anniversary special in November will be among the final shows televised in 3D as part of the trial. Half of the estimated 1.5 million households in the UK with a 3D-enabled…

Late Architecture with Functional Programming

Many approaches to software architecture assume that the architecture is planned at the beginning. Unfortunately, the architecture planned in this way is hard to change later. Functional programming can help achieve loose coupling to the point that advance planning can be kept to a minimum, and architectural decisions can be changed later. Michael Sperber talks about software architecture and functional programming at OOP 2023 Digital. Sperber gave the example of dividing up the system’s code among its building blocks. This is a particularly important kind of architectural decision to work on different building blocks separately, possibly with different teams. One…

Wait Chapel expands programming, strengthens community

“To look out across Wait Chapel on a Sunday morning and see multiple races and ethnicities and choral students and football players all in the same sanctuary together made me think we were getting something right,” Walton said of the Family Weekend service at which he preached . Christopher Gilliam Sacred music is an instrumental part of the chapel. Before joining Wake Forest in 2020, Christopher Gilliam, director of choral activities and an assistant professor in the Department of Music, directed the Winston-Salem Symphony and Symphony Chorus in a 2019 performance of the Mozart Requiem in Wait Chapel. He likes…

How to improve teaching in programming

Programming was introduced as a new element of Sweden’s compulsory school curriculum in 2018. It was linked to multiple subjects – mathematics, technology, crafts and social studies – to ensure that students gain a broad understanding of what programming is and how technical devices are controlled using code. Image Anne-Marie Cederqvist. “Many of the technical devices we use every day, and depend on them, are programmed. Technology education has an important role to play in giving students a general grasp of how technology functions and enabling them to develop a critical approach to it. “If we don’t have this general…

Neuro Linguistic Programming: Mental health veterans therapy fear

Prof Neil Greenberg, co-director of the Academic Center for Defense Mental Health at Kings College London, said: “If this group is not medically qualified and doesn’t know a person’s entire treatment history, because they haven’t got that, that could cause some real problems, it could be quite dangerous.” Healing the Wounds says it is collecting data to prove its treatment is effective, but Prof Greenberg says unless NLP is subjected to what are known as randomized clinical trials it cannot be established as an appropriate treatment for PTSD. He added: “NLP has not been investigated by proper scientific trials to…

Natural language boosts LLM performance in coding, planning, and robotics | MIT News

Large language models (LLMs) are becoming increasingly useful for programming and robotics tasks, but for more complicated reasoning problems, the gap between these systems and humans looms large. Without the ability to learn new concepts like humans do, these systems fail to form good abstractions — essentially, high-level representations of complex concepts that skip less-important details — and thus sputter when asked to do more sophisticated tasks. Luckily, MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) researchers have discovered a treasure trove of abstractions within natural language. In three papers to be presented at the International Conference on Learning Representations…
